Extending Your SUP Season

Extending Your SUP Season

Stand up paddling is a year round activity. There is no reason for your SUP to collect dust between October and March. A few changes to your attire and mind set can make all the difference.

Neoprene Booties

Booties are a must-have for for paddling at colder temperatures.  Either 5mm or 7mm neoprene offers the thickness necessary to keep your toes warm through winter. Many paddlers choose a round toe boot over a split toe, allowing room to layer a wool sock when the temperatures drop below 40 degrees. A shop favorite is the Xcel 6.5mm Dive Boot. An easy entry side zipper makes changing a breeze and the thicker sole keeps your feet happy on the trek from the parking lot to the water.

Proper Clothing

Look to find clothing that will keep you warm and safe if you fall in the water, but not so thick and oppressive you overheat while paddling. For flat water paddles, we recommend one layer of 1-2mm neoprene. This could a neoprene top, farmer john or neoprene tights. Layer your neoprene with clothing used for outdoor endurance sports like cycling or running.

PFD & Leash

Oregon law requires a personal flotation device (PFD) at all times. Some paddlers chose to switch from an inflatable PFD to a full vest.

Leashes are 100% neccessary when water temperatures dip. Should you fall in, you will minimize your time in the water by keeping the board as close to you as possible and preventing the need to swim for your board.

Water Awareness

We cannot overstate the importance of being aware of your local water conditions. Learn to read and understand current flow numbers, water temperature and wind speed in relation to your paddling skills.
